The Drive By LO

A Drive By Loan Officer, that's quite a term. That term is a spin off from the term "drive by shooting". If you're unfamiliar with that term, it's when some thug (yes I said thug!) gets in a vehicle, drives by a place, shoots randomly and then leaves the scene. He doesn't care who was hit, how bad or what the outcome is. His job was to get the shots off and move on, that's it.

Well, now that same concept can be said about some of the folks in the Mortgage Business. There are some Loan Officers who take that same concept (without the violence) and do the same thing, only verbally. Those folks will target a group of people, shoot off their mouth with unrealistic rates or sell a particular mortgage product without regards to the borrowers situation, close the deal and never follows up with their borrower. The LO doesn't care who was hit, how bad or what the outcome is. Their job was to sell a mortgage and move on, that's it.

Someone might say that's the way the business is. Others would say that's the wrong attitude and those folks won't be in the mortgage business very long. Which logic do you follow?

The sad part is, there are a LOT of these Drive By Loan Officer out there (also Drive By Mortgage Brokers). And, just like a drive by shooting, that's what the media focuses on. They don't talk about the Broker that went out of their way to work with the client. Or the Loan Officer that offered to assist the borrower move to their dream home. Or the LO that researched all the mortgage programs and printed out countless proposals and made sure the borrower knew all the ins and outs of that particular program.

Instead, the Drive By Loan Officer shoots off his mouth, hits the unsuspecting target and leaves the scene, never to be heard from again. Don't be a Drive By, take pride in doing this businsess the right way.
