How smart are you?

Science Project

A freshman at Eagle Rock Junior High won first prize at the Greater Idaho Falls Science fair. He was attempting to show how conditioned we have become to alarmists practicing junk science and spreading fear of everything in our environment.
In his project he urged people to sign a petition demanding strict control or total elimination of the chemical “dihydrogen monoxide.” And for plenty of good reasons:
1. It can cause excessive sweating and vomiting
2. It is a major component of acid rain
3. It can cause severe burns in its gaseous state
4. Accidental inhalation can kill you
5. It contributes to erosion
6. It decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes
7. It has been found in tumors of terminal cancer
He asked fifty people if they supported a ban of the chemical.

What do you think O great mortgage brokers?
Answer then scroll down vvvvvvvvvvvvvv

Forty-three said yes and six were undecided. Only one knew that the chemical, “dihydrogen monoxide” was water. The title of his prize winning project was, “How Gullible are We?” He feels the conclusion is obvious.

Only one figured it out? I bet it was Napoleon Dynamite.

This project illustrates a great point, though. You can spin just about anything if you really want to, and people will fall for the spin.

That story is at least 4 years old (that's when i read about it). I love stories like this. If you do as well, check out http://www.freakonomics.com/ the site is based on a book about critical thinking issues just like DHMO.

A couple times. It's a great book. The way it takes on Abortion, Race, Salesmen and so many other issues is so unique, that proponets on either side of these issues are upset. The author takes emotion out of the argument and speaks to the social economics of it all. It's a book that makes you think.
